The Surprising Admissions of a Carnal Believer – 1 Samuel 27 & 29

Shiloh Baptist Church, October 2nd 2016

Do you know the word “carnal”?  Carnal is defined as pertaining to or being characterized by the flesh and its passions and its appetites.  Carnal is having a worldly attitude and to be carnal is to act like you are not even a born-again Christ-follower.  Obviously, God’s will is for us to not be carnal but rather Spirit-filled and Spirit-led.

Paul used the word “fleshly” to describe Christians who refused to turn their hearts over to the control of the Holy Spirit in order to actually act like a true Christian.  In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul admonished the church, “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ.  I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not able, for you are still fleshly.”

Well, David opted to live a season of his life as a carnal believer.  David lost faith in God and decided to solve his problems himself.  God became a low priority but David faked it well.  And surprisingly, for a season, life was great…so David just hung out in the Carnal Life.  What about you?  Where are you living today?  Are you in God’s will or in enemy territory?

Four Surprising Admissions of a Carnal Believer

  1. I was surprised my life actually got easier in enemy territory (27.4)
  2. I was surprised I could get along so well with my enemy (27.6)
  3. I was surprised how fast the years went while I was away (29.3)
  4. I was surprised when I had no problem agreeing to join the enemy army (29.8)

My prayer – Heavenly Father, as a result of hearing You speak to me today, I want to pray this to You now:
