Free Indeed – Galatians 5.13-16
Shiloh Baptist Church, September 25, 2016 (Evening Service)
Are you free? Was your first thought “Yes”, or “No”? You might be thinking, “What do you mean by ‘free’?” The concept of freedom is highly valued in our world today. As Americans we often say, “At least in the United States we are still free.” But what does God say about freedom? Are we really free? How is freedom defined in the Scriptures? Let’s discover God’s perspective concerning “freedom” from His Word.
According to our text, the Christian is free from slavery to the demands of the Old Testament law. At the point of salvation, he or she experiences three “changes of the heart”. After this new birth in Christ, the believer experiences a new outlook on “freedom”. Is your view of ‘freedom’ biblical?
Three “Changes of the Heart” for the Spirit-filled Christ-follower:
- You sense a heart-felt passion to obey the will of God (5.13)
- You sense a heart-felt motivation to live sacrificially for others you do not naturally like (5.13)
- You sense a heart-felt obligation to deal with grace towards people you do not naturally like (5.14)
Conclusion: Meeting Jesus as Lord causes the Follower of Christ to redefine the meaning of “freedom” as the pursuit of the glory of God.
